Anders’s personal notebooks
Elder Shi Yi Anders’s personal notebooks, dated 48 ACD–90 ACD.
These are his personal notebooks: forty-two years of entries, running alongside research notes, publication records, and scientific materials he kept in parallel. Anders was an energy scientist in the Sect, later Elder Shi Yi Anders, and the adopted brother of Song.
The notebooks were never meant to be read this way. What is here is a record of a career. Crystal research, the extraction, the de-desertification project, the Gates, and also of a man who struggled to separate what he wanted from what he allowed himself to want. His fixation on Song’s choices, the resentment he couldn’t fully justify, the things he stayed silent about for years: it is all in the gaps between research entries.
He never wrote directly about Taj. But it is there.
Anders died before he returned from his last trip. The work he took with him — the e.i. Crystals, the engine designs, decades of research — was claimed under another name. His own was forgotten for more than a century.
These notebooks are what remains.

[Notes about the healing method attached.]
Personal comment.
We had an argument. My brother is immature. I found out how to cure it; however, he would rather not do it. He is not talking properly; another year. I didn’t hold my tongue, and we argued. He is not talking, so we had to exchange messages. Messages! It angers me.
…
Personal:
I argued with the team after I overheard Marina and Olaf commenting on my brother’s behavior. Recently, I have started to think that his clubbing is not as simple as it seems. I need to observe it closely.
…
[The old invention materials are attached; I searched for them on Elder Wei’s behalf.]
A note:
Elder Wei has been disappearing more often recently; it is difficult to schedule an appointment with him. My research progress is slow. The board didn’t accept my plans. I talked to Elder Wei about it, and he said that changes were needed. He said many things that worried me.
…
[The publications from the TU University attached, including the Deserts’ dry plants project description.]
Personal note:
Every year, I prepare something around the date when my brother was found dying in the Deserts. I do it to remember. My parents—our parents are gone. We needed to pay our respects too.
This time, it was exceptional.
Song was less silent and told me some things he had found in the Deserts that were scary to hear. He admitted to developing a new weapon without the board being aware. He also said I could be involved and help if I wanted, but not officially.
I got that. The board blocked my research. I am employed, yet I have nothing to do each day.
Wasteful.
Elder Wei brought me some very interesting papers from TU University. How he got that, I do not know, but I appreciate it. They made considerable progress. I told Song about it, and he was curious and read it too.
And yes, I agreed. I want to help. I understand why Song wants to destroy cartels. The board is simply mistaken.
…
Personal comment:
Song is my brother. Brother from another mother, as they say, in our case also from another father. He found his path by himself. He is involved in the Deserts research and cartels investigations. I joined, and I am impressed.
We examine those Crystal creatures.
The first one I saw made me vomit for several minutes. The energies within these creatures’ bodies are very strange. I work in hiding because the board didn’t accept it. Would they do to me what they did to Elder Lan if I were found out?
…
A note:
Elder Wei brought back Elder Lan—what an event. She is here with her daughter. I am thinking about how to approach them.
…
[49 ACD]
A note:
Elder Wei was appointed the Sect’s Leader. Great news.
Elder Lan is back, interested in science. I have reached out to her and have offered my labs and equipment. She and her daughter have agreed to work together.
We will start at least three projects soon, one of which involves Crystalers, although I’m not yet aware of the reasons.
Elder Lan’s daughter was without any Ability just a few months ago, but now she is at a level ready to pass Elders’ exam. Astonishing, I wonder how it was achieved.
…
[Attached the description of Elders’ exam updates.]
Personal:
Song passed the exam. I knew he had been ready for a long time. Our previous board was not open at all. Song! He is now Elder Jiu Song, the ninth strongest Abilitier—my great Song, my brother.
Though, we had an argument. I commented that, as Elder, it would be great if he stopped attending those clubs in the City.
He said nothing, and it’s the worst—when Song says nothing, it means he is angry.
I am not certain why it bothers me so much. His work is not visibly affected.
Elder! My brother is Elder, so young and already Elder.
…
A note:
There has been Crystaler in the Sect for some time already. Elder Lan advertised him to me; she calls him her diamond. I asked Elder Wei, and he told me more, yet it remains classified what Crystaler has done.
…
[Attached: TU papers by T. Manh.]
A positive surprise:
We argued over the approach to de-desertification with Elder Lan, and she sent me new papers to read. I found out that Crystaler’s name from the City is Manh. I had read his papers before.
What a surprise.
We also discussed the project connected to energies. I believe Elder Lan and her daughter could succeed with extraction.

[Attached: Notes about artificial veins, schemes, etc.]
A note:
Who would have thought that embeddings had artificial connections like veins and that Crystals were more like parasites?
It’s astonishing. And the information about switching Crystals on and off? Very interesting, especially since I know how my brother treats his Ability, very similarly. Crystaler is a great subject for our research; he is very open to ideas. I admit this.
…
[51 ACD]
Personal:
Song was promoted to the Army Commander. My brother! So young! I am very proud!
…
[Attached: Our notes about the embeddings and disconnections, the energy balancing technique, and first drafts for the future publication.]
A comment:
We found out why Crystal creatures must have more than one Crystal. Crystaler caught a creature today, but he later collapsed. It was because the sand crushed the connection in his embedding; his Crystal disconnected. Creatures need more Crystals as a backup.
Additionally, there’s another thing we’ve already found out and discussed.
The water balancing technique can be explained. It is a common way to balance Crystal energy by immersing in the water. But Crystaler needs a more drastic way. Now we can see that it is a problem with his Ability.
Whenever his Crystal disconnects, his Ability tries to remove the parasite, as we call the artificial energy veins of his embedding. Then his Crystal kills the host. Drowning restarts his body.
I will definitely join Elder Lan to research this matter further.
I need to test other Crystalers to see if they also require such drastic methods. From what I am aware of, it is not a common way. Why is this Crystaler so special in this regard? Interesting, what an object.
…
[ref. ‘Energy balancing methods,’ p. II, publ. Energy Science, vol. 8, comm., auth. ELL, me, TM co-auth.]; [ref. ‘Crystals behavior in natural surroundings,’ publ. Energy Science, vol. 10, TM co-auth.]
What a positive surprise:
Crystaler has access to TU University from the City. I was aware that he had finished his studies, but I didn’t know it was a professional doctorate. All right, he is reasonable.
I somewhat like his ‘bows of rejection,’ as others call them here in the Sect. Song could take it as an example.
…
Personal:
A disagreement with my brother, and who would have thought—about Crystaler. I think Song should focus somewhere else.
I am not judging Song, but Crystaler. All those stories about him and Clar.
I’ve heard.
I wonder if my brother did, though it surely wouldn’t be a problem for him. But who would have thought I would miss the times when Song used to go to clubs and didn’t care.
Everything is problematic.
…
[Attached notes: Coexistence of two energies; 2E, ELL, and TM add-ons; not to publish.]
A comment:
I tested Crystaler. I invited him to spar and asked him to check his energy level. I charged myself from the arena to have a chance to deplete his Crystal energy. After his Crystal disconnected, his Ability took over.
We knew he still had natural energy in him, but what a level…
It didn’t happen before; we didn’t encounter Crystalers where two energies coexisted like that.
Song transported in and took him to balance his energy.
We argued later. I understand; it was a mistake on my part.
I need to research it. Together, we will. Crystaler sent me a message already; he is keen to work with me—I admit he is hardworking. But his Ability will never be pure again.
I have some thoughts that worry me.
What if two energies not only collide, as in Crystaler’s body, but also change each other? It is not his case, but I need to look closely.
Elder Lan is also worried. It is connected to our other research about her daughter’s energy flow.
We talk frequently about how to approach these topics. Many unknowns.
…
Personal:
I feel ashamed. Crystaler, those bows of his. I argued with him, mentioned his past, and called him out for being covered in their mud.
He was in cartels.
…
[52 ACD]
[Notes attached: Embeddings, missing data about Meeran’s inventions marked.]
A note:
The embeddings and Crystal models—my research aimed to test whether older models were better. They cause pain and problems for wearers, but they do not completely disable Ability or corrupt the natural flow, if such a flow exists. Crystaler said that he assumed that having a newer model would harm his Ability.
To be tested.
…
Personal:
I visited the Deserts’ camp for the first time. Harsh. And Song lived there without complaints. My brother is great. We sat together and watched. A spectacle.
In general, we have trained warriors. High level of energies only; cultivation methods in rigor. And education is obligatory.
Watching how Crystaler not only physically overpowered others but also managed their moods worried me.
This is why Song wanted me to see it. What if in the City they had more like this one? He wrote to me that he had checked the City and was aware of what was happening there. However, cartels. What if they had more like this one?
Eyes opening.
…
[Attached: A scheme of the prototype of the embedding by Joost Meeran.]
Personal:
My plan regarding salaries failed; it was discovered, and Elder Lan was angry. I was punished officially.
I am unable to explain my reasoning, at least officially.
Good news, Crystaler wrote to me; he said it didn’t matter any longer.
And even better news: we got access to Clar’s library.
What a treasure we found.
…
[Attached notes from ELL: Dry plants; the rubbers.]
Personal:
I can see that Song has changed. His attitude is different from before.
I am worried about my brother.
…
Personal:
Song had healed his speech. Why did he change his mind now? He said he had his reasons. What reasons? He said nothing.
The Army raided the cartels. It was classified; I only got to know. What a great job, and this is my brother!
We need to check their labs; I need to pack and go.
…
Personal:
There was an accident, and I panicked. I was useless. When I was asked for ideas on how to help, I freaked out. There was just nothing in my head. I am ashamed.
From what I heard, Crystaler detonated his Crystal, saved some people, and collapsed—his embedding was destroyed.
It had to be very painful. I didn’t comment on it aloud. Song was worried, like I’ve never seen before; he also asked me to go out. I saw undressed Crystaler more than once during our tests in the labs; nothing new to me. Why did he act like that?
Elder Lan asked about extraction.
I prepared everything, and I am waiting for them to finish whatever they are doing now.
I wonder; we talked about it many months ago. Song promised to obey his rules as usual. Is he serious this time? Please, no, Song gets what he wants. I don’t.
…
[The extraction materials are attached, and the video and pictures are assembled.]
A note:
The extraction was successful; it worked. Crystal was fully disconnected. Ability didn’t return yet. Crystaler is exhausted, drugged, and sleeping now.
…
Personal:
What I’ve heard—what a shame. I feel sorry.
He doesn’t want to talk to anyone. I would like to talk to him.
There will be an execution. What a situation.
Shameful.

[53 ACD]
Personal:
My brother came to talk. He said something unexpected and wanted to talk about his past actions. He has a bad reputation indeed. Song said he is not at all content with his reputation. Finally, enlightenment.
However, what should I do? It is heading in a direction I had hoped it wouldn’t.
This is why I wanted him to join my labs officially, not the warriors. I could keep an eye on him.
It’s too late now. My brother will have fun.
…
[Additional documents regarding the extraction attached; Ability’s return description added.]
A note:
Elder Lan is very satisfied because our extraction has proved to be a great success. We are writing a commentary on our previous paper about it.
His Ability returned suddenly. Ex-Crystaler is with natural energy. He is even preparing for the Elders’ exam.
Which reminds me that I also need to prepare. Song helps me; I am grateful to my brother.
It is like when we learned together in the past. He was excellent at math and later in engineering topics. I am better at energies and biology. We helped each other then, and we still do. No one can spoil it. Brothers forever.
…
[54 ACD]
A note:
The de-desertification project has become official, and Elder Lan has also started thinking about the logistics.
Song is busy at the camps, and not only there, from what I know. I learned about it only a few weeks ago. I am busy. I must stay busy.
…
Personal:
Song married. I wonder how long I will need to wait. Will he cheat on him? When?
… I feel ashamed I thought this.
It is me, my problem. Why am I thinking things like this? I need a break from personal matters. I need more work; focus on science.
…
A note:
I prepared plans and am now waiting to see if the board will accept them. Our Academia.
Additionally, I want to start cooperation with TU University from the City.
Maybe I will steal Elder An for that. We are working together closely.
I am aware; I am still waiting.
I wonder when; it is quite long compared to the past situations. It will surely pass; my brother was never consistent.

A note:
The installation of artificial Crystals is complete; it has improved the camps’ stability. Still, risks are there; issues are possible.
Elder An and Elder Bao work in the camps; the de-desertification project looks promising.
I wanted to take An on a trip to the City, but my brother declined the invitation.

An announcement: my Academia—finally. I am speechless at its greatness.
I am very busy, with many students here. I also have some ideas; I discussed them with Elder Lan and Elder An, and they agree with me.

A note:
The transfer is done.
The Clar family’s dataset is in our hands—there are finally details about the embeddings, notes that could help with miniaturization. And a very strange language model, called ‘Andrew.’ It is not possible to activate it currently.
…
[62 ACD]
A note:
The whole year we were talking about logistics. I am tired of it. And what? Despite efforts, next year’s budget focused mostly on logistics.
Elder An was disappointed too; he said logistics is important, but de-desertification would ease logistics if done finally. I couldn’t agree more.
We teamed up, and what? My brother became angry at both of us.
…
[63-66 ACD]
[To remember: tests of the prototype Crystals failed; five pieces—all crumbled.]
A note:
Logistics, logistics, logistics. Even Elder Lan changed her focus and is helping with logistics.
The idea is to create another version of our Gate. Not that interesting from my perspective. However, I understand it is needed.
Unfortunately for me, Elder An decided to join her; he said that solving it would unfreeze the other topics. Maybe he is right. Maybe I should join them too. I could help them.
I recently saw An fall asleep in the lab; he was there in the middle of the night. My brother could have cared for his husband a bit more.
…
[Crystals and 2E., comm. born classified, Riggs, note: to meet.]
A note:
I suddenly received new funds and started unofficial cooperation with the City’s scientists, not yet with their main University.
Elder An helped me navigate who was who. The main topic is the miniaturization of Crystals.
I am curious, as I still want to research energies collisions.
Many of the notes are from Elder Lan and are mostly classified.
We also talked about artificial energy engines. They think about special ships. I am in, and I have a few colleagues—good engineers in the Sect—who would love to explore it further.
…
[De-desertification renamed as terraforming.]; [ref. ‘Crystals terraforming. Planetary complexity,’ publ. Artificial Energy Science, vol. 62, part 3, auth. ESA, me co-auth., EBB.]
A note:
With logistics partially solved, terraforming is finally the top project.
The City is interested.
Elder An prepared a draft; Elder Bao is included.
…
[67-69 ACD]
[Three more Crystals crumbled, another six prepared, a new idea.]
The project, a natural Crystals research, is restarted.
Elder Lan included only. Song had an idea that we all argued about. I think that his idea is valid. I need to reconsider my approach.
…
[All notes in another notebook, attached.]
Personal:
We dissolved the barriers; my protest was not heard. I packed up and went to the City for three months.
…
[70 ACD]
A note:
The City again asked for combined research. We didn’t agree; we surely do not plan to merge two energies. I study them separately; I see merging is colliding them; in some of my experiments there is even a process of further corruption. I observed problems with natural energy then.
The proposal was rejected. But we agreed to strongly cooperate on miniaturization.
…
[The experiment, comm., do not publish, ESA, ELL.]
Personal:
An was found in a terrible state. They had merged a new design of artificial energy Crystal into his old embedding. His body—crushed. The energies collide, and he won’t live long.
My brother is, like, mad. I don’t know what to think.
…
A note:
The City scientists are pushy; they tried to breach security and reach our servers. Meeting Riggs is essential; the situation is outrageous.
…
[-, +? born classified, do not publish, ESA, ELL.]
A note:
An, Crystaler again, has three (?) energies. We cannot figure it out. It looks more like a split of natural energy (‘positive split’) than a third type; this is the hypothesis for now.
Split hypothesis—it aligns with Elder Bao’s feature; she also has an additional something in her energy, ‘negative split’ we call it.
An has a different type; it’s not confirmed what it can do. He has problems managing it.
His energies are also corrupted; they collide.
…
Personal:
Song decided to die together with An. I do not agree. I told him that the Sect cannot afford his death together with An’s death.
An’s situation is enough to bear; I cannot lose my brother. He insists.
I wish back in the day that An hadn’t come or joined the Sect. I so want to tell An: Just kill yourself and stop inflicting pain on others.
I feel bad I thought like that. I am ashamed.
…
Song.
I have no words. News just reached me. And my brother, it didn’t work. It simply didn’t work.
…
An woke up. Song’s Crystal dissolved in our hands.
…
An’s projection is active but blurry. He can use his energy; he can morph as he could back then. He is almost real. I am disturbed. I am angry.
Why An, why not Song?
…
[Crystals, 3E, comm., do not publish, ELL comm.]
Personal:
An was here. I kicked him out. I’ve heard that he then went to my parents’ tombs. Paid respect or begged for forgiveness, I assume his reasons. Then he came back to me.
He kneeled for one day and one night, exactly as custom dictated in the City, Elder Bao later told me. He kneeled, and his projection was fully loaded. He could feel; I am aware. I kicked him; he fell many times and got up, didn’t say anything back.
I told him everything. I wanted his soul to bleed. I also saw that what I said—he thought about it already. He killed Song; he killed my brother.
…
Personal:
I feel ashamed. I feel like shit. I read what I noted. I thought about what I’ve done and said. I know I was wrong; I was angry and didn’t tell the whole truth.
I knew then, and I know now, it was not his fault; he did not force Song. Who could have forced him? Song made his decision on his own. I am aware; I was trying to change his mind too. But when Song decided, he decided.
I even know that An went to beg Wei for help, not to let Song die. But I also know Song begged Wei better.
Also. I didn’t tell them yet.
I went there and took them—all crumbled like every tested prototype before. But I think there should be two more of them. I took them to test the Gate some time ago, and later, I hid them in a secure place. Good thing I found a secure place — now I cannot find it.

Personal:
I couldn’t write for some time.
Many things happened. I came back from the trips. It did me good. An is working; he has started authoring papers; we talk; I even helped him come up with a nickname. We cannot admit he is still alive; his official death was reported. I think it is neat.
I asked about Song’s weapons. He said he wouldn’t tell me. This means he knows. I do not need it; I was curious. We talk.
…
[Drafts reg. the Gates’ nets, comments by 5#14N, Crystals prototypes for tests—to check again.]
A note:
We established Gates, and it was An who tested them. He is dead anyway. It went well; we are now creating a connection between them.
The City asked about it. They plan to use artificial energy; however, I am worried because it massively corrupts ours.
I returned to my Academia; terraforming is ongoing, and + An has made the magic. The City wants to test the artificial version.

Elder Lan. What a loss.

[ref. ‘Crystal Engines,’ 2xpubl. Artificial Energy Science, vol. 122, part 1-2, Riggs co-auth.]; [Crystals and +, comm. 5#14N, do not publish.]
A note:
Artificial energy bloomed.
Our Academia managed with miniaturization, and the City simply adopted and used it. The City also conducted interesting research. We joined forces before to work on terraforming and transporting devices, meaning our Gates idea.
Terraforming, interestingly, is the idea that An had. His + is what makes it safe; no collisions later.
The City, however, would they use it? Not really, how reckless. We do not have a way to convince them. Elder Lan has been gone for years now. I am tired. An is not involved; he shows up very rarely, and he also won’t go to talk there; formally, he is dead.
We are missing talents; natural energy is declining. I can say that our Leader is aware. We have already started to plan the next steps.
…

[The natural energy intelligence experiment, called the e.i.: 5#14N with Clar inheritance and the Academia archives, uploaded successfully; the way to upload data to the e.i.: not to publish.]
Personal:
I didn’t write. I have issues with organizing my thoughts. I am consumed by my selfishness. I didn’t tell An; despite our many talks about science, I remained silent. Would I regret it?
I didn’t find it; I think this is my excuse. To say something would give hope, which might be impossible to achieve.
I think I will write a letter.
Moreover, in the Sect, we all have a problem. It is massive, the collision.
I am lost, disheartened.
…

A note:
Ability energy is corrupted by artificial energy. I noted it in my documentation; I even did an experiment years ago about it. Somehow, the process has become very rapid.

[ref. ‘Crystal Engines Navigation,’ publ. Artificial Energy Science, vol. 129, part 2, Riggs co-auth.]
A note:
Riggs invites me to work together. I consider. An said I should be careful. I am aware. However, I think I need to leave for some time. I cherish our talks, but I feel guilty whenever we talk.
I am confused. Is he real or not? And he wants to kill himself; Elder Bao told me about it recently. But he hasn’t found a way; no one yet knows how to destroy his Crystal. My brother’s Crystal dissolved, but An’s is not to be scratched.
Plus, my guilt. I didn’t say a word. I still didn’t find it.
…
I found it!
One crumbled; however, one didn’t but is dead.
I am not sure what to do. I cannot give sudden hope because what if it doesn’t work? Looking at it, I am certain it won’t. I would need to try to activate it and then tell.
How did they activate it in the past?
I cannot find Elder Lan’s notes.
Additionally, how could I even speak about it after so many years? My silence, now I think, was a mistake. I should have said something about it many years ago.
…
[89 ACD]
A note:
I think I will pack and go; the concept Riggs has is quite astonishing.
It has given me new ideas. It makes me feel more alive. Because what if we could use Crystals that we did back then?
They are not used; there are eight of them, with Elder Lan’s bits. Currently, no one needs them for logistics, as my brother once intended. And for his weapons, about this, An said nothing. It might be better because I receive too many questions, so it’s best I remain unaware of how it works.
However, the navigation!
What if Riggs and I could use it to steer something entirely different?
Explore space?
Moreover, using these Crystals to navigate not only the ships but also terraforming, it needs An’s +, but he already said he would help me. And to navigate the connection with the Gate, the main one we have here in the Sect—the natural one. It could work.
I even did the test alone; it worked. On a small scale, but who knows?
The more I think about it, the more certain I am that I will go there.
There is an additional reason for this trip. I hope Riggs can help me evaluate the prototype. Maybe we will succeed and activate it. Or it will crumble, solving this problem I encounter.
…

[8 Crystals and the backup: the main case packed and locked; the second case with the test Crystal and my personal notes prepared separately, some data uploaded on my messenger.]
A note:
I plan to give Riggs Crystals during our meeting scheduled two days from now. I want to give him four for his tests and keep four for myself.
We could have a competition—whoever develops the best way to navigate the route and activate the Gate will be the winner and the first author.
I wonder. Riggs is talented, despite what An says. He was nice enough to say I was more talented and should stay in the Sect. He said he would work with me more.
An truly tried. I appreciate it.
I will listen to his words when I am back; I plan to finally test it, and then I might admit it.
The test Crystal I will discuss separately; it’s safe in the other case. It looks dead, but it hasn’t crumbled like the others.
…
Personal:
I decided not to write a letter after several failed attempts at expressing something so personal. I need to make a note and talk to An when I get back. I am not sure; the more time passes, the more I doubt my past actions.
Too late, I think, to dissect it? I will talk to him after I try.
…
[The engines’ ideas are attached—my dream; to comment after the meeting, 8 Crystals taken out of the case.]
A note:
Riggs was not pleased about the competition, but he agreed. We plan to work together tomorrow; I will take my Crystals as well. Riggs said he wanted to measure them all before choosing his four. How silly. But I agreed; it could be interesting.
There is a chance I will meet this engineer; Riggs mentioned that there was a person who could evaluate my engines’ ideas. I wonder.
I made a note; perhaps if I approach it in this way, I will finally say it out loud.
…

A note:
A. How many prototype-Crystals Song prepared: total 18.
B. How many crumbled: 17. One test Crystal is left, but inactive. Stored in a case. It was done years before the idea about storing consciousness inside.
C. Song transferred his energy to those prototypes, but they didn’t work like Elder Lan’s.
D. No clue how to activate it.
I am not certain how Elder Lan’s Crystals were activated; it was classified. However, I am almost sure it wouldn’t work the same with the prototypes. Song tried, and nothing worked.
E. The last prototype Crystal could have bits of Song’s consciousness. Not confirmed.
